Birthday Dinner in Bangkok: Cake Rules, Booking Windows and Where to Go

Most Bangkok restaurants will mark a birthday. Far fewer will tell you beforehand what that means, or what it costs. At Bisou, a modern French restaurant on Soi Langsuan listed in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026, the birthday plate comes to every celebrating table at no charge, and you can bring your own cake without paying a cutting fee. Here is how a birthday dinner works in this city, and where to have one.

We plan a few of these every week, so the questions come round often: can I bring a cake and will it cost me, how early do I need to book, and does my group need a private room. Everything after that is taste. Those three first, then the rooms.

Can you bring your own cake to a restaurant in Bangkok?

Yes, almost everywhere. The fee is the part you have to ask about, because hardly any restaurant puts it somewhere you can find it. You will see a figure of 300 to 800 baht quoted online. We would not plan around it. Ask the restaurant directly, and get the answer before you carry a cake across town in traffic.

A few places are clear about where they stand:

• Bisou, Soi Langsuan: you may bring your own birthday cake at no charge. There is no cakeage and no corkage on it, and the team will cut it and serve it to your guests.
• ARTUR, 9 Soi Tonson off Ploenchit Road: guests may bring their own cake and their own decorations, stated on the restaurant's own celebration page.
• Pastel Rooftop Bar, Aira Hotel on Sukhumvit 11: outside cakes are accepted if you add a note when booking, and the venue gives a complimentary dessert to every birthday guest.

Wine corkage is easier to find out about. When The BigChilli surveyed the city in 2018 it found no corkage at the Grand Hyatt Erawan, Arno's and Dressed, 500 baht at Eat Me, Cocotte, Gianni and La Monita, 800 baht at Issaya and Char, 1,000 baht at Nahm and Savelberg, 2,000 baht at Le Normandie and Vesper, and 10,000 baht at Mezzaluna. Prices move, so read it as the shape of the market rather than tonight's list, and call ahead if you are bringing a bottle that matters.

How far in advance should you book a birthday dinner in Bangkok?

Two to three weeks for a weekend table at a well-known restaurant, and considerably more for the small number of rooms that release seats on a calendar. Bangkok's most in-demand kitchens do not work on a rolling booking window at all.

• Sorn, the southern Thai restaurant, releases tables monthly rather than continuously: international guests by email to reservation@sornfinesouthern.com at midnight Bangkok time on the 15th, and online bookings through TableCheck at midday Bangkok time on the 25th for the following month, moving to the 24th when the 25th falls on a Saturday. A birthday at Sorn is planned a month or more ahead or not at all.
• Le Du asks for special occasion arrangements a minimum of 72 hours before the date. Groups above five must take the six-course tasting menu, everyone at the table must choose the same number of courses, and a change made inside 72 hours costs 5,000 baht per person. Le Du also states it does not allow any reduction in party size notified less than 72 hours ahead, which is the clause that bites when a birthday group shrinks at the last minute.
• Pastel Rooftop advises booking at least a week ahead for a birthday.

The pattern is clear enough to plan against: the more a restaurant relies on a fixed menu, the earlier it needs to know, and the more expensive it becomes to change your mind. Give any restaurant taking a set menu at least 72 hours' notice of the birthday itself, and tell them the number of guests you are actually confident about.

What do Bangkok restaurants give you for a birthday?

Less than you would expect, and rarely anything promised in advance. A handful of places are generous and specific about it, and those are the ones worth knowing.

Mexicano Restaurante Auténtico, on the fourth floor of the Rembrandt Hotel, spells its birthday terms out more fully than anyone: a 10 percent discount on birthday celebrations, a complimentary cake, and free corkage on one bottle for a group of four or more. Offers move, so confirm it when you book.

Pastel Rooftop Bar gives a complimentary dessert to every birthday guest and will add sparklers to bottle service. The room holds 160 seated or 300 standing and can be taken over entirely.

Aesop's, the Greek restaurant on level 25 of the Column Bangkok on Sukhumvit 16, promises nothing and says so plainly: "Let Aesop's know it's your birthday! They might just offer a special surprise or serenade you with a festive Greek song." The conditional is theirs, and we rather like the honesty.

Bisou brings the birthday plate to every celebrating table, without being asked and without a charge: Happy Birthday piped freehand in dark chocolate across a large plate, quenelles, edible flowers, a lit candle. It arrives whether you booked the sharing menu or ordered three plates at the bar.

Where to have a birthday dinner in Bangkok

The right room depends on the shape of the night, not the price. These are places we would happily send a friend to, with what each one says about birthdays. Prices are per person before the 10 percent service charge and 7 percent VAT unless stated.

Two more, for a group large enough to need a floor rather than a table. Nobu Bangkok has four private rooms, KAWA for 18, MORI and MACHI for 12 each and SANCHO for 8, with a minimum spend that they quote on request. Kimpton Maa-Lai is refreshingly specific: Bar.Yard holds 140 seated or 200 standing with a full buyout from 250,000 THB++ Sunday to Wednesday, 300,000 THB++ on Thursday and 400,000 THB++ on Friday and Saturday, or a partial from 2,000 THB net per person, while Ms.Jigger takes up to 74 guests from 35,000 THB++ Sunday to Thursday and 80,000 THB++ at the weekend.

For smaller private rooms, BK Magazine noted Bornga up to 9, Zuma 6 to 16, Nusara 11, Baan Tepa 14 and Mia 10. That was January 2024, so confirm before you plan a group around it.

Why a sharing menu suits a birthday

Because a birthday table is a group facing each other, and food that arrives in the middle keeps them that way. Bisou is a modern French restaurant on Soi Langsuan, about two minutes' walk from BTS Chit Lom, opened in 2024 by chef Antoine Darquin and sommelier Théo Lavergne, with Freya Nowack as head chef. The kitchen builds every plate to be reached across: a menu made for two pairs of hands, and for eight.

The five-course chef's sharing menu is 3,400 THB per person and is chosen by the kitchen, which removes the one conversation that spoils a birthday table, everyone reading a menu in silence. À la carte runs to roughly 3,000 THB per person. The room seats 75 and serves about 75 covers a night, so a Saturday birthday is worth booking. There is a private room for 17 and a second space for 45, and full private events run from 150,000 THB+++.

Bisou is listed in the MICHELIN Guide Thailand 2026 as Selected, and won Best Date Night at the Lifestyle Asia Best Bites Awards 2026. Tatler describes it as "a chic French gastro-wine bar... with a kiss of charm". The Google rating sits at 4.9 across about 3,000 reviews.

Buying the birthday dinner for someone else

A gift voucher is the version of this that works when you cannot pick the date. Bisou vouchers run from 3,000 to 40,000 THB, arrive by email within seconds as a printable PDF, stay valid for two years and can be spent on anything, food or wine. You choose the amount, they choose the night, which for a birthday falling in a busy month is often the more useful gift than a table booked on a date that suits you.

It is also the answer when the birthday is tomorrow. The voucher is issued the moment the payment clears, at any hour, so a gift decided at 11 PM still arrives before midnight.

Practical notes for a birthday in Bangkok

Read this before you book, not after.

1. Say it is a birthday when you book, not when you arrive. Every restaurant above that does anything at all needs the note in the reservation.
2. Ask what the cake will cost before you carry one across town. Ours is free. Assume others may charge, and find out on the phone rather than at the table.
3. Read the bill format before you set a budget. At this level menu prices are usually quoted before a 10 percent service charge and 7 percent VAT, which you will see written as ++ or +++. On a table of ten it is worth knowing in advance.
4. For a group above eight, ask about the minimum spend in the first message. Gianni states 50,000 THB, Kimpton publishes a full tariff, Nobu will only say a minimum applies.
5. Book the week, not the day. A Tuesday birthday dinner in the same room is easier, quieter and just as much of a birthday.
